Shortwave Bookstore, New York NY
![]()
Shortwave is the first bookstore of Soft Skull Press. It was important that the bookstore have a strong visual impact, but also be able to store all the press’s overstock.
The bookcave’s form lifts from the floor and bends overhead out of sight.

The structure is an armature of bent steel conduit, a material used to build exterior awning supports. The two foot wide modules work together to form bookcaves of varying lengths. The cave forms a space for reading by arching away from its supporting wall. Nylon webbing wrapped around the final bend creates a place to sit.
